Abstract
This article investigates the relationships between e-commerce, digital markets, and economic growth in the European Union, focusing on a comparative analysis of Germany (Western Europe) and the Czech Republic (Eastern Europe) from 2015 to 2024. Utilizing Eurostat data and a comparative case study analysis, the study finds that the Czech Republic, repre-senting an emergent Eastern European digital economy model, achieved a higher average GDP growth rate (2.2%) compared to Germany (0.78%), despite lower absolute digital maturity. The results suggest that institutional flexibility, stable e-commerce adoption, and an export-oriented focus can be key drivers of growth in the digital age, challenging traditional narratives of an East-West ”digital divide”. The article contributes to the digital economy literature by highlighting the divergent pathways of digital transformation within Europe.
