Adam Smith - liberal economist or stoic moralist and what would Adam Smith say today?

Tomasz Piwowarski

Abstract

Publications on Adam Smith could fill the shelves of more than one library. This Scottish thinker of the 17th century continues to inspire economists, and his message is timeless. Adam Smith’s philosophy, however, goes well beyond the realm of economics. He also formulated the concept of ethics presented in The Theory of Moral Sentiments. This theory gave some framework to his economic views, as presented in the second work, An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations. This article provides its own version of the interpretation of both works, reading them as one great message from Adana Smith. An attempt has also been made here to relate this message to the current socio-economic reality.
