Abstract

Of the various sources of renewable electricity, it is photovoltaics that has experienced the most dynamic development in recent times. It is also being presented as the most promising area for the generation of free energy from solar radiation. Forecasts of further increases in installed photovoltaic capacity, reaching dizzying heights of tens of gigawatts, are repeatedly appearing in the mass media and the popular press. What is more, such a rapid increase in the installed capacity of photovoltaic panels is presented as an overwhelmingly beneficial phenomenon, in line with the common statement that the more, the better. However, in reality, the matter is by no means as simple as it might appear at first glance, because every increase also has its natural limits, and this also applies to the increase in the total capacity of photovoltaic power plants. The authors of this article postulate the existence of a certain critical value for the total installed capacity of photovoltaic panels, which, if exceeded, will not only fail in economic grounds, but, what is much worse, will also cause serious problems related to the issues of stability of the operation of the electricity system and the need to balance the generated power.
